In the last three years the city of Sisak and its suburbs have suffered extreme flooding due to heavy rainfall events. Three rivers, the Sava, the Kupa and the Odra, meet in the suburb of Staro Pracno.

In 2014 igr d.o.o. was commissioned to design rainwater drainage and flood protection for the four suburbs of Stupno, Staro Pracno, Zabno and Odra Sisacka. In this first stage, the basic conditions, data and facts are being collected and evaluated, and a so-called concept design is being developed.

The reasons for the floods are manifold. On the one hand, the water table has risen significantly in recent years, and is now constantly higher than historically. This is possibly linked to the raising of the bed of the river Kupa. On the other hand, it should also be noted that the dykes are leaky and also possibly too low for today’s water levels. In the new city districts, areas that were formerly used for agriculture have been built on. There used to be a functioning ditch system, which in recent years has been destroyed by building, and now functions only fragmentarily.

In the course of the data processing and analysis, we proposed that the study area be widened to include an adjacent very large settlement. The city of Sisak decided to follow our advice and include the similarly affected settlement of Selo in the concept design.

This project will be undertaken in partnership with colleagues from our parent company in Rockenhausen.
