The city of Sisak and its suburbs have been affected by flooding several times in recent years as a result of rainfall events. In the Staro Pracno suburb, three rivers meet: the Sava, the Kupa and the Odra.

igr d.o.o. was commissioned with the development of a concept for rainwater management and flood protection for the five suburbs - Žabno, Odra Sisačka, Stupno, Staro Pračno and Sela. Approx. 3 700 residents live in the catchment area. The assessment area covers approx. 3 530 ha.

In the initial phase of the project, the important fundamentals, data and facts were compiled and assessed. It was determined that, in earlier times, there was a comprehensive system of ditches for the drainage of rainwater. It was approx. 35 km long. 11 critical zones were shown in the concept.

Overview map with flood zones

The causes of the flooding are many and varied. It was determined that the existing flood protection dykes are leaky and are no longer fit for modern water levels. In the new districts, areas which today are built up used to be used for agriculture. The ditch systems have been destroyed in recent years by building developments and only partially still function today.

Our concept is based on innovative and sustainable rainwater management. The innovative approach was possible because igr already had relevant experience, and there is regular sharing of knowledge between the Croatian and German colleagues. Our concept shows how flood protection can be integrated into urban land-use planning in the future beyond the technical solutions.
