Condition survey of air operations areas at Düsseldorf Airport

As part of the so-called EASA certification, the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) requires evidence from airfields of a Pavement Management System (PMS) for all air operations areas by 31st December 2017.

As a consequence, igr was commissioned in 2015 with the establishment and development of such a maintenance programme at Düsseldorf international airport.

The basis for this was provided by the PAVER™ – a PMS software program developed in the USA on behalf of the US Army Corps of Engineers and the Construction Engineering Research Laboratory, for air operations areas and roads.

While in Düsseldorf the recording of ca. 280,000 m2 of surface area and associated damage had already taken place, the condition of a further 91,000 m2 was recorded and incorporated in the program as part of local inspections in autumn 2017. In the next few years further areas will be inspected and entered in the system.

The services provided by igr include:  the introduction of the management software, the condition survey and assessment of all air operations areas, and the evaluation of the resulting rehabilitation and maintenance workload. These help Flughafen Düsseldorf GmbH in the structured planning and administration of a long term maintenance programme.

The recording of further air operations areas is planned in spring 2018.
