Bekond Renaturierung Kahlenbach

Renaturisation of the Kahlenbach stream, Bekond, Kreis Trier-Saarburg

igr oversaw the renaturisation of a 1 km section of the Kahlenbach stream, from the development of the renaturisation design and its funding application, via the preparation of the authorisation application in line with § 68 WHG (German water law), to the on-site construction supervision. A particular challenge in developing the renaturisation design arose from the topography and the directly adjacent residential area, requiring many technical imperitives (the pipework system, road crossings, a variety of narrow spaces) to be taken into account. Due to the site being on the edge of a residential area, comprehensive agreements with private landowners were required.

Pipework was exposed, the hydromorphology substantially enhanced though structural elements, such as diverse river beds and embankments, old wood, stones, etc., and the longditudinal profile varied through meanderings. Of particular interest was the re-creation of near-nature sections in the upper and lower courses of the renaturisation site, and through this, the creation of free-passage in line with the European Water Framework Directive.
