Water supply and environmental protection measures at Lake Shkodra, Albania

Shkodra (approximately 100,000 inhabitants) and the municipally linked village of Shiroka lie directly on the bank of the largest lake in the Balkan peninsular, Lake Shkodra, which due to its bird protection area is nationally important.

The project goals are to secure a sustainable and reliable drinking water supply for the city of Shkodra; and the improvement of the municipal sewage network as well as the construction of a new sewage system and a waste water treatment plant for Shiroka – to prevent the discharge of untreated waste water into Lake Shkodra. Furthermore, the relevant municipal company UK Shkodra will be transformed into a modern, self-financing public utility company.

The project components include the planning and invitation to tender for the investment measures, the construction supervision following the FIDIC Red book, and measures to strengthen the operational viability of the public utility company.

The project was funded through a partnership of the German Financial Cooperation with Albania, the Austrian Development Cooperation, as well as the Swiss State Secretariat for Economic Affairs.

igr was significantly involved in supervising construction, on behalf of the Joint Venture Stucky/Dornier-Schneider Consulting.
